ABOUT OUR SPECIALIST NURSES PROGRAM

The Save Our Sons Duchenne Foundation nurses program was developed to ensure ‘Best Practice’ clinical care for all with Duchenne and to support bringing clinical trials to Australia.

To achieve this we launched the nurses program in 2016 to fund a specialist neuromuscular nurse in each of the 5 major childrens hospitals across Australia.

1. Vic – Royal Childrens Hospital, Melbourne / Murdoch Childrens Research Institute
2. NSW – Childrens Hospital Westmead, Sydney
3. WA – Perth Childrens Hospital
4. QLD – Lady Cilento Childrens Hospital, Brisbane
5. SA – Womens and Childrens Hospital

Costs of each site year and total over 3 years:

1. VIC – $50,000 year / $150,000 total – Commenced in Sept 2016
2. NSW – $138,000 year / $414,000 total – Commenced in May 2017
3. WA – $50,000 year / $150,000 total – Commenced in December 2017
4. QLD – $83,000 / $249,000 total
5. SA – $50,000 / $150,000 total

This ambitious program costs $371,000 a year and we need your support to make it sustainable in to the future.

For the the price of a cup of coffee each week $5, that’s just $260 over a year, so we can sustain the nurses program into the future.

Sign up today, all donations over $2 are tax deductable and you will receive an annual tax receipt direct to your email.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR THE COMMUNITY?

The Save Our Sons Duchenne Foundation Nurses will:
Facilitate bringing clinical trials to Australia; and coordinate Australian-based clinical trials for Duchenne (as has commenced in Melbourne, with several more trials due to start later this year).

Provide coordinated care for Duchenne families; thereby improving standards of care across Australia. The nurses will coordinate care so that families only need to visit the clinic once to see all of the specialists needed for optimal care and make sure all check-ups are scheduled at the recommended intervals. Just a phone call away, with solid knowledge of each patient’s history, they will also offer significant support to families navigating the complicated and difficult journey of caring for a child with Duchenne.
Provide specialist knowledge and experience with Duchenne to the multidisciplinary team.

Assist families to join the DuchenneConnect Australia Registry – to ensure critical and up-to-date data is available regarding the Duchenne population in Australia.
